Sport Activities

Sport is one of many good gifts given us by a loving Father! At JWCS, every child participates in exercise, games and team sports which provide fun and relaxation, while developing healthy bodies, physical skills, team-work and good sportsmanship.

As a small school, we are not able to field many competitive teams.  Although this may be perceived as a loss, current research indicates that an over-emphasis on competitive sport in schools is detrimental at many levels.  Amongst affluent schools, there is increasing pressure to use the sporting success of a few (in a restricted range of non-lifetime sports) to promote the school “brand”.  According to sports scientist Prof. Tim Noakes, schools should rather aim for greater levels of physical fitness for all and for more children to leave school with the desire and knowledge to remain physically active for life.  This would result in greater sporting success at a professional level for the whole nation.  This is why we prioritise physical education over competition.

Nonetheless, competitive sport remains a gift to master and enjoy.  Whenever opportunities arise, we play friendly matches against other small schools. The upgrade of our sports field is a project for the latter part of 2012 and 2013;  this will lead to improved sporting opportunities and events.  Currently, cricket, mini-cricket, soccer and mini-soccer are popular, despite the state of the sports field, while netball and other ball games are played on the paved forecourt.

Cross-country running (U.S.S.A.S.A Primary school league) has been part of our winter sports program for many years and we have a very committed team of runners.

We also make use of facilities in the neighbourhood. The annual sports day is held at Sunlands Primary School. Swimming takes place at the Woodside Special Care Centre in summer. There is an annual swimming gala, sports day and fun day.
