Welcome to the John Wycliffe Christian School family. We’d like you to feel at home as soon as possible, so please read the information below. It will tell you what to expect and how best to prepare your child for the transition into ‘big school’ or a move from one school to another.
All new pupils come for a three-day assessment and orientation programme before starting school. This is a valuable time for everyone – teachers, children and parents – and helps establish a good starting point for our relationship. Children may wear civvies or the school uniform of their current school.
On the first day of the three day visit: come to the school office at 8:00. Your child’s teacher will meet you and take your child to the class. You may accompany them to the classroom, but it’s best to leave as soon as they have settled with the other children for morning devotions. This is a peaceful, non-threatening way to be introduced to the new environment. If there are tears, they quickly dry when mom or dad have left. If your child is really distressed, the teacher will call you.
A special Grade 1 day is held in November every year, for parents and children. All children should be accompanied by at least one parent for this very important orientation day. You will meet your child’s class teacher and the Principal and learn more about what a Christian school offers. They will also outline the school’s expectations and answer your questions. The grade 1’s will meet the senior pupils who will look after them when they start in January. You will receive information about stationery needs, school uniform, school times, and the extra-mural programme. The school uniform shop will be open to buy new or second hand items.
Ensure that your child has comfortable clothing, a warm top and a school bag, clearly marked with their name. Avoid clothing that hinders active play.
Pack a healthy snack lunch, including fruit, sandwiches and juice. Please avoid or strictly limit sweets, fizzy drinks and processed foods. The Pre-school does not have break at the same time as the rest of the school, so they will not be able to use the school tuck shop.
Please arrive early, from about 7:50 to 8:00. The classroom will be open at 8:00 am, and you may accompany your children there, help them find their place, and take photographs. Parents are invited to tea in the hall once the children have started devotions.
Parents should park outside the grounds, but may come inside to wait on the playground benches for their children. Lessons end at 12h15 every day. Children should be collected by 12h30, after which they will go to the aftercare facility.
Ensure that your child has the correct uniform and a school bag, clearly marked with their name.
Pack a healthy snack lunch, including fruit, sandwiches and juice. Please avoid or strictly limit sweets, fizzy drinks and processed foods. There is a tuck shop which sells snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, popcorn, home bakes, and fruit or yoghurt ices.
Provide all required stationery items in a pencil case or bag. You need not buy exercise books as these are included in the equipment fee.
